Discord offers an entertaining platform where hardcore gaming enthusiasts can easily interact through voice and text. Although the platform is known to be quite robust and reliable, users may encounter the occasional “No route” error message.

The “No Route” error message appears when there is a problem connecting to a voice channel. If you need to know how to solve this problem, you are on the right page.

In this article, we'll go over a selection of troubleshooting tips you can try to clear the "No route" error. As there are many different things to try, feel free to check out the other sections of the article for additional troubleshooting ideas and use the steps as a guide.

What does no road mean in Discord?

The "No Route" error informs you that you cannot join a voice channel at this time. The reason for this varies, but here are some common scenarios where the "No Route" error can occur:

  • A change to your dynamic IP address has been made by your ISP.
  • You are using a VPN solution without User Datagram Protocol (UDP).
  • Your network does not support "High Packet Priority QoS".
  • You are trying to connect to a server hosted on another continent.
  • Discord is blocked by third-party virus protection or firewall.

How to Fix No Route in Discord on Windows 10 PC

For a successful connection to a Discord voice channel, try these troubleshooting steps on your Windows 10 PC:

1. Restart your modem/router and your PC

Sometimes a simple reboot is all it takes to fix any technical issue, so let's start with that.

A "No Route" error is common when an IPV6 connection has been interrupted by a change to your dynamic IP. Even if you have a static IP address, restart your modem/router to refresh your network settings and unblock any system resources that may be stuck. Now try connecting to the channel again.

If you still see the error, this time restart your PC and then try to connect again.

2. Enable UDP on your VPN

Discord seems to work well with VPNs that have User Datagram Protocol (UDP) enabled for connections. So if you recently changed your VPN settings, try resetting them to what they were before and restarting your PC before trying to connect to the channel again. This will restore your connection and hopefully allow you to log in successfully.

3. Make sure Discord can pass through your antivirus and firewall settings

To make sure Discord is allowed to make connections, here's how to create an exemption for Discord on your Windows Firewall:

  1. Click on the “Start” button.
  2. In the search bar, type “Control Panel”.
  3. Click on the “View by” drop-down menu and select “Small icons”.
  4. Choose "Windows Defender Firewall".
  5. Select "Advanced settings".
  6. In the left sidebar, select "Inbound rules", then in the right sidebar, click on "New rule".
  7. Choose "Port" for the new rule, then "Next".
  8. Under “Does this rule apply…” select “TCP”.
  9. Click on the “Specific local ports” option.
  10. Enter "443" in the text field, then "Next".
  11. Choose the option "Allow connection", then "Next".
  12. To "Where does the rule apply?" select the three options: “Domain”, “Private” and “Public”, then press “Next”.
  13. Enter a name in the "Name" field, for example "Discord", and a description if you wish, then "Finish".

How to Fix No Route in Discord on a Mac

Try these steps through your macOS to fix voice channel connection issue in Discord:

1. Restart your modem/router and your computer

The "No Route" error message is a common cause when an ISP changes an IP address. If you have a dynamic or even static IP, restarting your modem or router will refresh your network settings. Try this, then see if the error persists. If so, restart your computer and try again.

2. Renew your IP address

Since the IP address assigned to your computer may have changed, if your system is configured to use "DHCP", manually renewing your IP address may be helpful. Here's how to do it on your Mac:

  1. Click on the Apple menu.
  2. Select "System Preferences", then "Network".
  3. In the list on the left, choose the network service whose IP must be renewed.
  4. Select "Advanced", "TCP/IP", then "Renew DHCP Lease".
  5. Restart your Mac to update the change, then try again.

3. Enable UDP on your VPN

Discord works best through VPNs that have the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) option for connections enabled. Make sure this option is enabled in your VPN settings. If you made a change recently, try undoing the change to see if that helps. This will restore your connection. Before trying to reconnect to the voice channel, restart your Mac.

How to Fix No Route in Discord on an iPhone

To get rid of the "No Route" error message in Discord on your iPhone, try the following troubleshooting steps:

1. Restart the app and your iPhone

Try closing Discord and then restarting your phone. Doing this tends to erase all conflicts and basic technical issues. Once your phone restarts, log into Discord and try connecting to the voice channel again.

2. Disable QoS

Quality of Service (QoS) helps prioritize data packets while in transit. To reduce lag and ensure quality performance, most voice applications, including Discord, use "high priority packets". However, this can cause issues, so try disabling the setting, here's how:

  1. Log in to the “Discord” app.
  2. Tap the "User Settings" cog icon.
  3. In the left panel, navigate to the "Voice" settings.
  4. Scroll down, then tap the "Enable high priority QoS for packets" switch to turn it off.
  5. Try connecting to the voice channel again.

3. Update your voice server region

Another cause of the "No Route" error can be when the voice channel you are trying to connect to is hosted on another continent or there is an outage in that region. The further away the server is, the more ping and lag issues you will experience. Therefore, you will have to choose a server geographically closer to you by asking the server administrator to make the change.

If you're an administrator, here's how:

  1. Log in to the “Discord” app.
  2. Tap the server or the 3 dots next to it.
  3. In the menu that opens, tap "Settings".
  4. In the "Server Settings" window, tap the channel in the left panel if it's not already selected.
  5. Various information about the server will be presented to you. Next to the server region override, tap the "Edit" button.
  6. On the server region screen, choose the region closest to you.
  7. Restart the Discord app, then try connecting to the voice channel again.

How to Fix No Route in Discord on Android Device

To fix the Discord "No Route" error message, try the following tips on your Android device:

1. Restart the app and your Android device

Close the Discord app then restart your device. This can sometimes do the trick to fix basic technical issues. Once your phone restarts, log into Discord and try connecting to the voice channel again.

2. Disable QoS

Quality of Service (QoS) reduces lag and ensures high performance by prioritizing data packets during transit. Discord and other similar apps use "high priority packets", however, this can cause issues. The “No Route” error message could be one of them. Here's how to disable this feature on your Android device:

  1. Connect to “Discord”.
  2. Tap the “User Settings” cog.
  3. Go to "Voice & Video" settings on the left sidebar.
  4. Scroll down, then tap the "Enable high priority QoS for packets" switch to turn it off.
  5. Try connecting to the voice channel again.

3. Update your voice server region

The "No route" error could also be the result of trying to connect to a channel hosted on another continent or a problem in that region. To avoid ping and lag issues, you will need to select a server that is geographically closer to you by asking the server administrator to change the voice region of the server.

If you're an administrator, here's how:

  1. Log in to the “Discord” app.
  2. Tap the server or the three dots next to it.
  3. In the pop-up menu, tap "Settings".
  4. In the "Server Settings" window, tap the channel in the left panel if it's not already selected.
  5. This screen will display channel information. Next to the server region override, tap the "Edit" button.
  6. Select the region closest to you.
  7. Restart the Discord app, then try connecting to the channel again.

How to Fix No Route in Discord When Using a VPN

Discord works well when your VPN has the "User Datagram Protocol" option for connections enabled. If you recently changed your VPN settings, try going back to the previous setting, restarting your device, and then trying to connect to the voice channel again.

How to Fix No Route in Discord When Using a Mobile Hotspot

Mobile hotspots use different IP addresses than the one assigned to your device when you connect to the Internet. Discord does not work well with changing IP addresses unless the change made now matches the connecting device.

We suggest trying to connect to the voice channel again using a normal Wi-Fi connection so that Discord can see your real IP address.

The road is now clear

A “No Route” error message is displayed when there is a problem with your connection to a voice channel. Some of the more common causes include a dynamic IP address – Discord needs the IP address accessible on the internet and the one assigned to your device to be the same. To fix this, you can connect to a voice channel hosted on another continent or you can get a server admin to let you join a server closer to where you are. Or sometimes a simple restart of your modem/router and your device is enough to solve it.
