Instagram has come a long way since its humble inception in 2010, now one of the most popular apps. More than 300 million people use the image and video sharing platform.

In late 2022, following the iOS 13 dark mode update, Instagram launched a dark mode for its app. iPhone owners on iOS 13 or later and Android users on Android 10 or later can use dark mode on Instagram with the latest version of Instagram. There are also ways to change Instagram's color scheme through a third-party app or a browser extension from Instagram's pre-dark era.

This article will show you how to set up dark mode on Instagram on your iOS, Android, and desktop devices.

Enable dark mode on iOS

There are a few easy ways to enable dark mode on your iPhone and iPad in iOS 13. We are just going to show you how to do it on iPhone as the process is exactly the same on both devices.

First method: the control center

  1. From any screen on your iPhone or iPad, open your Center de contrôle. On iPhone 8 and earlier (Touch ID), you do this by swiping up from the bottom of the screen. On iPhone X and newer (Face ID), as well as any iPad updated to iOS 13, you swipe down from the top right corner of your screen.
  2. In the Center de contrôle, press and hold Brightness slide.

  3. Le Brightness The cursor will grow and take up the entire screen. Tap the bubble on the bottom left to turn on Dark mode and press again to rotate Dark mode disabled. When enabled, Instagram will also be in dark mode.

Second method: display settings

  1. Open the Parameters app on your iOS device.
  2. Tap Display and brightness.

  3. You can switch between Light et Dark mode at the top of the screen. Instagram will switch to the mode you set your device to.

Third method: set a schedule

  1. Open the Parameters app on your iOS device.
  2. Tap Display and brightness.

  3. You will notice a toggle switch that says Automatic just below the Light et Dark option. When you enable this switch, your iOS device automatically switches between Light et Dark depending on the time of day (Dark the night, Light during the day). Instagram will automatically change with these settings.

  4. You can set the times you want to switch between the two modes by selecting Options directly under the Automatic to fall over.

Method Three: Dark Mode on iPhone Using Smart Invert

If you have an iPhone, you can use the Smart reverse function to change the background colors of all applications to a dark mode suitable for night. The feature is easy to set up, and while it might take a bit of getting used to, you can use it when you're in a dimly lit room or at night without burning your eyes out. Here is how you can configure it:

  1. Open Parameters.
  2. Aller vers Reduced mobility.

  3. Select Text display and size.

  4. Choose between the Smart reverse et Reverse classic option. Select one and the colors on your screen will invert. (The white background will turn black and the black letters will appear white. Other colors and highlights will retain their original colors.)

You can also set up a Accessibility shortcut So you can activate the feature by pressing the Home button three times.

Instagram dark mode for Android devices

Some Android smartphones have a built-in dark mode, but you may need to download a third-party app for most of them. That said, even if you install an app in dark mode, it may not work on your Instagram account. Starting with Android 10, dark mode started impacting a variety of apps, but not all. If you have 10 or more, try the built-in dark mode first.

Android dark mode

If you set your Android 10 phone to dark mode, many screens will appear black with white text. Please note that this will change a variety of dark mode apps. Your texts, contacts, and photo album backgrounds, for example, will be black with white text. Some apps, like Facebook and Amazon, will continue to look the same, but Instagram is one app that will go dark mode.

The process is pretty straightforward, and you'll have the option to switch between white screen and dark mode as much as needed.

  1. To access Parameters.

  2. Press Show.

  3. You will see a toggle next to " Dark theme " in the Show menu. Enable this option and your screen will instantly switch to dark mode.

  4. Log in to Instagram to ensure this change has taken place.

Use the Night Eye browser extension for desktop

But wait! What if you don't always use Instagram on a mobile device? Fortunately, there is a way, with the Night Eye browser extension. Not only will Night Eye provide a beautiful dark mode for Instagram, but you can also use it for other websites to ease your nighttime browsing on old voyeurs.

The Night Eye extension is cross-platform and will work on any device running a supported browser. The list of supported browsers is truly impressive, including Edge, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera, and several others. The extension lets you configure websites to run in one of three modes: dark, filtered, and normal.

Installing the Night Eye browser extension is trivially simple:

  1. Go to https://nighteye.app/

  2. Select the appropriate browser from the "Install" menu on the Night Eye site.

  3. This should take you to a browser-specific page: tap the "Add extension" or similar button to add the extension.

Night Eye offers multiple tiers of service, ranging from free to inexpensive. The free version of the extension is yours forever, with the only limitation being that you can only use it on five specific websites. You can also purchase an annual subscription for $9, which removes the 5-site limitation. Alternatively, you can deposit $40 as a one-time payment to get unlimited use of Night Eye in perpetuity.

Instagram's dark mode can save your eyes

Remember that too much screen time has many negative implications for your eyesight and overall health. People who spend more than four hours staring at their phone have been proven to experience fatigue and headaches, not to mention watery eyes and other issues. Set up dark mode on your phone and you can at least make sure the damage is minimal.

It doesn't matter whether you use Instagram or any other app; if the background is white, your eyes will feel the strain after a while. Things get even harder on your eyes if you're looking at the screen in a dark room, so it's always best to install or enable dark mode in those cases.
