Introduced in Apex Legends Season 2, the Leaderboard is a place where players can test their abilities in competitive matches against opponents of the same level. Ranked Queue has a few notable differences from regular game queues. New players are encouraged to hone their shooting skills, learn the maps, and become familiar with all game elements before diving into the world of ranked games.

If you think you're ready to play ranked in Apex Legends, here's the breakdown of what you need to know to get started.

How does ranked Apex Legends work?

The overall gameplay of ranked matches doesn't differ much from the standard Trios game mode. You can queue alone or up to two other players in a group and play on a map against 19 other teams (usually). However, that's where the similarities end.

All players are tiered in the ranked queue based on their acquired RP (ranked points). There are a total of seven tiers: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Master, and Apex Predator. The first five levels have four divisions each, with division four being the lowest of each level. Apex Predator is tier specific, only counting the top 750 players per platform. Here is the required RP for Division IV of each level (or master):

  • Bronze : 0 RP
  • Argent : 1200 RP
  • Or : 2800 RP
  • Platinum : 4800 RP
  • Diamant : 4200 RP
  • Masters: 10 RP
  • Apex Predator: Top 750 players with over 10 RP

Players are usually paired with opponents of the same rank. For groups, the highest level reached is taken into account to place the group. When queuing together, players above Platinum cannot queue with players two levels below them. This means that Platinum players can only play with Diamond and Gold players in the ranked queue.

How do I gain or lose RP?

Each time you start a match, you lose RP based on your current level. Bronze players lose no RP for playing the game, allowing them to rank up with enough games played, slowly. For all other tiers, the amount of RP lost at the start of the match is as follows:

  • Argent : 12 RP
  • Or : 24 RP
  • Platinum : 36 RP
  • Diamant : 48 RP
  • Apex Master and Predator: 60 RP

This RP loss cannot force you down a level. This effectively means that if you reach Platinum, for example, in a ranked division, you cannot go down to Gold for that division. Players can drop divisions if they lose enough RP to drop below the division threshold. Apex Predators players can also lose their status if they stop being in the top 750, depending on their RP.

Players can get in-game RP in two ways. The first is to be one of the top 13 teams standing. The closer you get to the top; the more RP you earn. The maximum amount of RP earned this way is 100 if you are the winner of the match.

The other way to earn RP is by getting kills or assists. A kill is simple. All you have to do is fire the last shot at an opponent who knocks them down. Dealing damage to an opponent that someone else kills, no later than 10 seconds later, counts as an assist. Crypto can also get assists by locating enemies with his drone. Each kill or assist will give you RP, up to a maximum of six kills per match. The amount players receive is based on their team's rank at the end of the match, starting at 10 RP if you're below 10th place up to 25 to win. All RP gains are calculated after the game ends for your team.

RP gains mean that the winner of the match will receive up to 250 RP if they score at least six kills during the match, reduced by the entry cost of their current level.

Due to increasing RP costs to join the match and increasingly high requirements to reach higher divisions and levels, players near the top of the ladder must have a high kill/death ratio and survive long in their matches if they want to move up the tiers.

Abandonment and penalties

Unlike regular games, Ranked Queue puts a strong emphasis on players sticking around until the last possible moment. To that end, dropping out of the game while your teammates still have a chance to revive you will prevent you from playing any queues. The penalty starts at 10 minutes for the first offense and increases for subsequent retirements within a short period of time. Players can safely exit the game if 150 seconds pass after teammates have collected their banners but have not respawned them or if their banner's timer runs out.

Forfeiting the game also loses any RP you would have earned for that game.

If a player disconnects from the game before the start of the dropship phase, their assigned teammates (matchmaking) can leave the game without the associated leaving penalty or RP loss for joining a match. Members of the group with the player who disconnected will be penalized with an "abandonment".

Ranked Cards and Divisions

Unranked matches rotate two maps every few hours to diversify gameplay and allow players to enjoy more options during their games. Ranked games, however, use a single map for all games during half of each season, called a division.

A ranked split usually occurs in the middle of the three-month season. A split also resets everyone's level progression, bringing them back two to three levels, depending on where they are at the end of the split and their RP. This way, players must continue to play ranked matches at each division if they wish to stay on top of their game and the rankings.

Ranked Rewards

At the end of each ranked season, players receive rewards based on their highest level achieved in two splits of the season. All players receive a badge indicating their highest level reached. Gold players and above receive a special charm to commemorate their position. Diamond players and above get a special dive course to use in the following season. The dive track is colored according to the level reached and visible to all players when the owner leaves the dropship.

Additional FAQ

Why do I keep losing my Apex Predator Rank?

Since Apex Predators must be in the top 750 players on their rig, they can drop their level if someone else gets more total RP. Completing games without getting a lot of RP also puts you at risk of slowly losing ranks due to the prohibitive cost of 60 RP to participate in each match.

How much RP does it cost to play Apex Legends Ranked?

Every time you enter a game, you start immediately with a loss of RP, unless you are in the Bronze level. For all other levels, the RP loss varies depending on the level:

• Silver players lose 12 RP when joining

• Gold players lose 24 RP

• Platinum players lose 36 RP

• Diamond players lose 48 RP

• Master and Apex predators lose 60 RP

To make up for this RP loss, you need to get a good number of strikeouts (maximum six per game) and survive to be in at least the top 13 teams.

What's the fastest way to rank up in Apex Legends?

There is no proven formula for ranking fast. Since RP gains are tied to your participation in kills and your survival, you need to get a mix of both if you want to rank up. Some players prefer to give up with lots of other people and try to get early kills and snowball their lead. For others, it's better to get decent loot and intel.

A surefire way to get RP is to avoid fights at all costs and wait to get the top spots. This method is slow if people don't eliminate quickly and you miss a good chunk of RP on takedowns, but it's one of the easiest and most reliable methods of getting RP every game.

Getting better in the game, improving your positioning and shooting skills, and learning to cooperate with other team players will give you the best chance of winning.

What is a good rank in Apex Legends?

According to Season 8 stats, 35,6% of players are silver and bronze, 31,8% gold, and 26,16% platinum. Diamond and above players make up only 6,2% of the player base, meaning roughly one out of every 16 players falls into these ranks.

Generally speaking, reaching Platinum level shouldn't be too difficult if you have the time to improve some of the basic skills and still earn more RP than you lose. Masters players are only 0,4% of the playerbase, making them the ultimate goal for a competitive player but unreachable for most people.

How does Ranked Division work?

Ranked splits occur approximately halfway through a ranked season. All players have their RP partially reset when a split occurs, typically lowering them by 2-3 levels. This is the only way to push inactive players down the tier list and allow new talents to rise through the ranks.

When a Ranked Split occurs, the active map changes for the remainder of that Ranked Season.

Rank up in Apex Legends

If you think you have what it takes to be one of the best players in Apex Legends, you'll need to test your mettle in the game's ranked queue. The matchmaker will pit you against opponents of a similar skill level, and it's up to you (and your two teammates) to get kills, survive, and earn RP in the process.
