How to change a MetaMask password

MetaMask is a cryptocurrency wallet application created for the Ethereum blockchain. You can access it through the MetaMask mobile app or web browser extension. Since you can set up different passwords for the mobile app and browser extension, it's easy to confuse them or forget one. That's why you need to know how to change your MetaMask password on these two devices.

How to change your password in MetaMask

Each time you access your MetaMask wallet, you must first enter your password. Keep in mind that MetaMask is a non-custodial cryptocurrency and token wallet. In other words, you are the sole custodian of your assets. Any data regarding your MetaMask wallet, such as your password, username or email address, will not be stored in MetaMask's database. Instead, all of your data is displayed locally, either on the mobile app or browser extension.

Changing your password on MetaMask is easy when you know what it is. However, if you do not remember your MetaMask password, you must reset it. This is done using the recovery passphrase, which is basically a key to your MetaMask wallet. Your recovery passphrase is given to you when you first create your account, and you cannot change it. It can have 12, 15, 18, 21 or 24 words. Also, you can't access it without a password, creating a catch-22, so it's important to write it down somewhere when creating your account.

How to Change Your Password in MetaMask on an iPhone

Let's first see how you would change your password in MetaMask on your iPhone:

1. Open the MetaMask app on your iPhone.
   
2. Enter your current password.
   
3. Select the "Connect" button.
   
4. Tap the three horizontal lines in the upper left corner of the screen.
   
5. Switch to the "Security & Privacy" tab.

6. Look for "Change Password" in the list of options.

How to change your password in MetaMask on an Android device

The process for changing and restoring your password in MetaMask on an Android device is similar. Follow the steps below on how to do this:

1. Open the app on your Android device.
   
2. Type your current password and press the "Unlock" button.
3. Access the sidebar menu by tapping on the three horizontal lines in the upper left corner.
   
4. Go to “Security and privacy”.
   
5. Find and select the “Change Password” option.
   
6. Enter your new password.
   
7. Confirm your new password.
   

If you can't remember your password or won't log in to your account at all, here's what you should do:

1. Run MetaMask.
   
2. Tap the “Import using a passphrase recovery phrase” option on the login page.
3. Type your recovery passphrase in the first field.
   
4. Enter your new password.
   
5. Confirm your new password.
   
6. Select the "Import" button at the bottom.
   

You must fully understand the recovery passphrase. If you try to restore your password with the wrong phrase, your current wallet, accounts, and assets will be permanently deleted from the app.

How to change your password in MetaMask on a PC

If you want to use the MetaMask browser extension, you cannot directly change the password there. However, you can reset it by importing your wallet from the mobile app using your recovery passphrase. When you do this on the mobile app, MetaMask gives you the option to sync your mobile app with the browser extension.

If you haven't, or aren't using the mobile app at all, here's how to reset your MetaMask password on your PC:

1. Open your web browser.
   
2. Click on the MetaMask extension icon in the upper right corner of the screen.
   
3. Switch to the option "Import using a recovery passphrase" in the pop-up window.
   
4. Type or paste your "recovery passphrase" into the first box.
   
5. Choose a new password. It must be at least eight characters.
   
6. Confirm your new password.
   
7. Click the "Import" button.
   

You have successfully changed your MetaMask password. That's why it's important to write down your recovery passphrase somewhere when you first create your account.

When you return to your home page on the browser extension, you will notice that you do not have the option to change the password. You can only view your recovery passphrase. This is how it's done:

1. Click on your profile picture in the upper right corner.
   
2. Choose "Settings" from the drop-down menu.
   
3. Proceed to "Security & Privacy" in the left sidebar.
   
4. Go to the "Reveal Recovery Passphrase" button.
   

Keep in mind that if you choose to sync your mobile app and browser extension, the password you selected for the mobile app will no longer be valid. Instead, the password you set for the browser extension will be the only one you can use. If you have not synchronized these two MetaMask platforms, you can use two passwords at the same time.
