Due to its huge popularity, many people try out Fortnite just to see what it's all about. They create an account, put in a silly username, and then start playing without expecting too much from the game. If they want to continue playing, however, they often regret the name they originally chose. Others just want to change a username they now consider boring.
In this article, we are going to show you how to change your Fortnite username for all platforms.
How to Change Your Username for Fortnite on an Android Device
If you are using the mobile version of Fortnite, changing the username is a simple process. As the game itself doesn't have a dedicated site, relying on the Epic Games webpage for all of its settings, you'll need to change it there. To do this, follow these instructions:
- On your Android device, open your mobile internet browser.
- Go to the Epic Games website by typing "epic games" in the search bar. This should be the first result.
- If you are not logged into your account, you can do so now. If you're already signed in, skip to step 7. Otherwise, you can sign in by tapping the three-line icon in the top-right corner of your screen. Tap Connect.
- Touch the icon of the desired connection method.
- Enter your username and password, then tap Login Now.
- Once logged in, you will be back on the home page. Tap the Three Lines icon in the top right of the screen, then tap your username.
- In the menu that appears, tap Account.
- Scroll down to Account Settings. You will see your display name greyed out. Press the edit button to its right. It's the blue pencil button.
- Enter the username you want, then enter it again in the display name confirmation text box, then tap Confirm.
- Your display name should now be changed. You can exit this screen and continue playing.
How to Change Your Fortnite Username on an iPhone
Changing usernames on mobile is not platform dependent as the change happens on the Epic Games Accounts page and not the app. To change your username on an iPhone, follow the instructions given above. They are one and the same. The only difference is that you are using Safari instead of another web browser.
How to Change Your Username for Fortnite on an Xbox One
For console users, their display names are not linked to their Epic Games account. Instead, they depend on their console service providers. For Xbox One, this means your Fortnite display name is tied to your Xbox Gamertag. It should be noted that changing your Xbox Gamertag changes it for all games, not just Fortnite. To do this, follow these steps:
On Xbox One
- Using your controller, press and hold the Xbox button.
- Go to Profile & System, then choose your existing Gamertag.
- Choose my profile
- Select Customize profile.
- Under the Choose a new gamertag tab, enter the new gamertag you want to use. Alternatively, you can choose one of the suggested Gamertags. You can choose More Suggestions if you want to see another set of suggested usernames.
- Select Check Availability to see if the Gamertag is already in use. If so, choose another name or change it to be unique. If not used by anyone else, confirm your selection.
- You can now navigate away from the system screen.
Change gamertag using a browser

Upgrading Console Accounts to a Full Epic Games Account
If you play Fortnite on console or cross-platform and are not registered with Epic Games, you may consider upgrading to a full account. This allows you to transfer progress from one console to another. As Fortnite offers Crossplay compatibility, this could be a great idea. To do this:
- On a web browser, go to the Epic Games website.
- Make sure you are currently logged out. Otherwise, log out now.
- At the top right of the screen, click Login.
- Choose the icon for the platform you have an account on, either Xbox or PSN. If you have a Nintendo Switch, this can also be chosen.
- You will be redirected to your platform account. Enter your credentials. Once completed, you will be redirected to Epic Games. Note that if you are not taken back to Epic Games, this means that this account has no progress data. Check again if you have logged in to the correct account.
- Enter the required details, then click Create Account.
Additional FAQ
Here are some of the most frequently asked questions regarding Fortnite usernames:
1. Is changing your Fortnite username free?
The answer to this question depends on the platform you are using. If you use the mobile versions, like Android or iOS, it's totally free. This is also true for the Nintendo Switch version. The PC version also offers a free name change. Since your username change is tied to Epic Games, you won't have to pay for any additional display name changes you make.
The same is not true if you are using the console versions for Xbox and PS4. Changing your account name will only be free if you are changing your gamertag name or PSN for the first time. Any additional changes will need to be paid for. Xbox and PlayStation charge a fee for additional edits after the premiere. Each edit currently costs $10,00 per edit on both platforms.
2. How often can you change your Fortnite username?
If you change your username using the Epic Games account, you can do this once every two weeks. This means that if you are using Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch or PC, you will have to wait two weeks after each change.
Since PlayStation and Xbox charge users for account name changes, they can do this as often as they want.
Follow simple steps
There can be several reasons why someone would want to change their Fortnite username. There are those who want to change imagined usernames on the fly or want a new one because the old one has become obsolete. Doing so is a fairly simple process, as long as you know the steps.
