Discord is a safe space where you can chat with those who share common interests. But like everywhere on the web, you may come across people who are not pleasant to talk to and who may even be rude. Fortunately, platforms like Discord have to handle this problem. Namely, muting.
However, finding out that someone did this to you doesn't make you happy. Today we're going to walk you through how to check if someone has muted you on Discord to help confirm your suspicions.
How to Check if Someone Muted You on Discord
Discord offers users two types of mute: channel and local. Only server administrators can mute users channel-wide, while any user can mute other users locally. When a person is muted on the entire channel, none of the channel users will hear them. On the other hand, local mute only works for one user.
Locally muted users do not receive a notification about this. So the only way to determine that you have been muted locally is to check the other user's reaction. They will stop reacting when you say something. However, you may have trouble determining this if the user never reacted to your words in the first place. Server or channel admins are also not notified when someone is cut locally.
With channel-wide muting, it's a bit easier. As with local mute, you won't receive a notification, but you can track the reaction of all users instead of just one. If everyone is ignoring you, you're probably muted on the whole channel.
How to Mute Someone on Discord
For some reason, you might want to deactivate a Discord user yourself. If you are on someone else's server, you can only mute other users locally. Here's how:
- Join the same voice channel with the user you want to deactivate.
- Right-click on their username to bring up the Settings menu.
- Check the box next to "Mute".
If you want to reactivate the user, repeat the same steps and select "Reactivate" at the end. If you have admin permissions, follow the steps below to silence a user for the entire channel:
- Make sure you are on the same voice channel as the user you want to disable.
- Right-click the name of the person you want to deactivate.
- Click on "Mute from server". The person will be immediately silenced for the entire channel.

Is muting the same as blocking on Discord?
No, muting is a lesser punishment for users who don't behave as you would expect on Discord. This is a non-confrontational method of avoiding talking to someone. Often users don't even notice they've been muted. Blocking someone is a more serious method of dealing with annoying users. It should only be implemented in severe cases, when someone is really pissing you off.
When you block someone from your friends list, they are completely removed. If you are on the same server, you will no longer see messages from the user. The blocked user will not be able to identify you, send you messages or find your profile. In other words, blocking is completely obvious, unlike muting.
How to get sound on Discord?
Being muted on Discord can be upsetting, especially if you haven't done anything wrong. Sometimes users can be cut off by mistake. In this case, you may want to unmute to start communicating with others again. But only the user who muted you can unmute you. Luckily, even if you're muted, people will still receive your messages, so you can politely ask them to unmute you.
As you can see, there's no way to know for sure if you've been muted on Discord. Although you can track the behavior of other users, this is not always a clear indicator. Either way, if you think you've been muted, always be polite and don't spam users asking them to unmute you. This may have the opposite effect than intended.
