Minecraft is often played in multiplayer mode on servers, allowing you to meet new people. Unlike other games, you cannot communicate using voice chat without mods. Therefore, your best bet is to use text chat to communicate with other players. However, some players would prefer not to activate the chat function at all.

If you don't want to see messages from other players, you can turn it off in-game. It's not a real handicap because you're just hiding it. However, it works great if you want to explore in peace.

How to Disable Chat in Minecraft

Typically, all you have to do is find the option to hide chat in the Options menu on all platforms. As each platform has different controls, we will see how to disable the chat option for all versions.

For Java Edition, here is what you need to do:

  1. Start Minecraft.
  2. Enter your server.
  3. Press the Esc button on your keyboard.
  4. Select "Chat Settings".
  5. In the upper left corner, click once on “Chat: displayed”.
  6. This will change it to "Chat: Hidden".

From then on, no new chat messages will appear on your screen. You also cannot chat at all, and that includes entering commands. If you only want to see orders, you can click the button until it says "Orders Only".

If you want to re-enable chat, you can repeat the same steps as above to bring up the chat window again.

  • computer
  • PS4

Most PC gamers play on Java Edition, although it's not uncommon for some to play on Bedrock. As there are a few platforms here, we will guide you through each of them individually.

Players on Xbox One will use its included controller. The pause button to the left of the XYAB buttons will bring up the menu. Here are the steps to disable chat on Xbox One:

After that, you'll be completely in the dark when it comes to other players' text communication.

Minecraft: Bedrock Edition on mobile devices is the same regardless of your phone's operating system. Therefore, we will group the exact instructions in one place to make things more convenient. For iOS and Android, the Pause button is at the top of the screen, to the right of the chat button.

Disabling chat in Minecraft on iOS and Android looks like this:

  1. Launch Minecraft on your mobile device.
  2. Enter a multiplayer world.
  3. Press the Pause button.
  4. Select “Settings”.
  5. Choose “Accessibility”.
  6. Tap "Chat: displayed".
  7. When it says "Chat: Hidden", you can press "Done" and continue playing.

Mobile devices allow for easier typing than consoles, but if you don't want to be disturbed, go ahead and hide the chat window.

You are using a Pro Controller or Joy-Cons to play Minecraft on the Nintendo Switch. Even on third-party controllers, the pause button is the "+" button near the right. On the right Joy-Con, it's the big "+" near the top.

Can your chat permanently disable chat on servers?

If your server has special plugins, you can use them to completely disable the chat window. There are many plugins for Minecraft, and each of them has its own instructions. A great plugin is Disable Chat, but it's currently out of date.

To disable chat with this plugin, follow these steps:

  1. Install Disabled Chat.
  2. Launch your Minecraft client
  3. Go to a server that you have permission to modify.
  4. Open the chat window.
  5. Type "/disable chat" without the quotes.

Other plugins may have commands that perform similar actions. You can search for them online, as most are free to download and use on your servers.

don't speak here

Disabling chat allows you to do your own thing without being disturbed by other players. Whether that's your preference or you're a parent who prefers to restrict their children from talking to others online, hiding the feature is relatively simple. A few gestures are enough to limit the chatter and explore the landscapes of Minecraft in peace.
