Like all true hardcore survival games, DayZ doesn't let the player walk around as if nothing had happened after an injury. If you don't heal in time, you will die. With Update 1.10, seven years after the game's initial release, players received a new type of injury to worry about: broken bones.
Leg fractures in DayZ (and in real life, for that matter) should be dealt with as soon as possible. In this guide, we'll help you fix this problem and stay alive in the challenging world of DayZ. Read on to find out how to fix a broken leg in the game.
How to Fix a Broken Leg in DayZ
Taking morphine and pretending the leg doesn't hurt is no longer possible in DayZ. Instead, you'll need to craft a splint. Also, the fracture does not magically disappear when you apply the splint. It heals slowly over time. But enough talking, here are the instructions for making a splint:
- Pick up four rags or a bandage and two short sticks.
- Open your inventory and equip yourself with two staves.
- Then, slide the cloths or a bandage over your hands.
- Open the crafting table and scroll through the recipes until you find "Splint".
- Press and hold the left mouse button while you craft the brace. Once done, you will see the splint display in the “About” tab. On an Xbox, press and hold the "B" button. On a PlayStation4, press and hold the circle button.
- Apply the splint to your leg.
Although crafting a splint helps with fractures, the wound will only heal if you reach the following stats:
- 2.600 Water
- 4.000 Food
- 5.000 dong
- 5.000 Health
Thus, you will have to sleep well, eat dinner and avoid injuries or fights for a while.
How do bone fractures work in DayZ?
You may wonder why you would care about a broken bone in DayZ if it doesn't kill you. All you have to do is avoid further injury and sleep well and eat well. The problem is that it's much easier to get new injuries with a broken bone than when you're healthy. Here's why.

You cannot run with a broken leg, even if the brace is applied. And since you can only walk, it becomes easier for enemies to catch you. Luckily, you can still drive and get over obstacles, as long as they're low. It's your only way to avoid fights.
A morphine injection can only help if you have a leg injury other than a broken bone. This will increase your health and allow you to run. But that does nothing against the fractures themselves.

Bone fractures only happen when you jump from a certain height. If you jump from a height of up to three meters, you will not see any decrease in your HP or any injuries. At a height of four to 10 meters, your HP will decrease. The fracture will only occur if you jump from such a height several times in a row. But if you jump from a height of more than 10 meters, the fracture is almost inevitable. Do not attempt to jump more than 14 meters, as this will likely result in death.
You cannot suffer a second bone fracture while you are currently healing from it. However, you also cannot prevent a fracture from occurring by applying a bandage beforehand.
Can I heal a broken bone without a splint?
Yes, broken bones heal on their own if you reach the necessary stats:
- 2.600 Water
- 4.000 Food
- 5.000 dong
- 5.000 Health
However, it will take about twice as long without a brace. Therefore, you have a much higher chance of dying as you will have to avoid further damage for longer. In DayZ, this is no simple task. On average, healing a broken leg with a splint takes about 30-40 minutes of play. Without a splint, the process can take 70-80 minutes.
Where do I get the materials for a splint?
We have determined that a splint should not be overlooked in the event of a bone fracture. Now you probably want to know where to find the materials. Obviously you can acquire sticks by chopping down trees or bushes. As for the rags, you will need to cut a few clothes. Be careful, however, not to freeze to death by sacrificing your last t-shirt. Alternatively, you can search medical loot spawns for bandages.
Take care
Fixing a broken bone in DayZ isn't much different from doing it in real life, and that realism is why we love the game. Crawl to a safe place, apply a splint, make a fire and get get yourself delicious food (or any food you can find). Above all, avoid physical encounters and do not jump from inadvisable heights. You wouldn't do that in real life, would you?
