Facebook Messenger has become one of the most popular chat apps. As you would expect from such a popular platform, you can block and unblock other users. Although you can block other users on Facebook, Facebook Messenger also offers the feature separately from the social media platform.
If you accidentally block someone on Facebook Messenger, or have forgiven their indiscretions, you can easily unblock them. Here's a quick guide on how to unblock someone on Messenger, covering iOS, Android, and web browsers.
Facebook Messenger is available as an app on Android and iOS devices. The interface is quite similar on iOS and Android. However, there are some slight differences.
iOS (iPhone and iPad)
iPhone and iPad users can follow these steps to unblock another user on Facebook Messenger:
- Open Facebook Messenger and tap your profile icon in the upper left corner.
Tap the Messenger app to launch it and select your profile picture (top left).
Swipe down and tap People under Preferences to access more options. Blocked is the last in the window, which will list everyone you've blacklisted.
Tap a contact you want to unblock and tap "Unblock on Messenger". A pop-up window will appear asking you to confirm the decision. Tap Unblock again and you will be able to receive texts and calls from this contact.
The same window allows you to unblock someone on Facebook. As you may know, it is possible to block someone on Messenger while remaining friends on Facebook.
Again, you start by selecting the profile picture in Messenger Chats and going to People. From there, the verbiage is slightly different.
Select Blocked people to see blacklisted profiles, then you tap Unblock next to a contact's name. Of course, Android also lets you block/unblock that person on Facebook from the same window.
This method may require more work, but it is a practical alternative. This is what you must do.
Log in to Facebook on your favorite browser and click on the triangle icon to access the More menu.
Choose Settings from the drop-down window, then the Blocking tab (located in the left menu).
Here you get the full block management portal. You are looking for "blocked messages".
You will find a list of blocked contacts under “Block Messages”. Simply click Unblock next to the name of the person you want to unblock. There will be no confirmation pop-up, so consider yourself warned.
How to Block Someone on Messenger
Here is a quick recap on how to block a user on Messenger.
Go to chats and go to the one you want to block. Enter the chat thread and tap the profile picture of the person you want to block. Then swipe down and tap Block for more options.
Select "Block on Messenger" in the next window and confirm your choice in the pop-up window. Note that this action does not block this person on Facebook.
The other way to do this is to tap on your profile picture in Chats, select People, then Blocked. Tap "Add someone" and choose a person from your contacts.
There is no option to block posts from Pages and Business Profiles, at least it's not called Block. After tapping on the profile picture of the page, you will see Receive notifications and Receive messages. Tap the switch next to Receive Messages to turn it off.
There are two ways to block someone on Messenger here. Go to the Blocking tab (as described above) and enter the contact's name in the box next to "Block messages from".
Another option is to click on the Messenger icon, select the chat thread you want to block and click on the gear icon. Select Block and you're done.
