Netflix Keeps Crashing On Roku – How To Fix It

Netflix keeps crashing on your Roku? Flows suddenly drop or restart? Does the app close as soon as you open it? These are common issues faced by Roku users when trying to access Netflix through the service. This tutorial will show you a few ways to prevent that from happening.

Roku is a great streaming device that's the gateway to hundreds of legitimate TV channels, sports, movies, music, and more. With more channels than you could watch in a lifetime, it's an ideal option for cord-cutters. Especially when you can access other streaming services through it.

Since Roku is a simple device, there are only a few things you can try to fix any channel that isn't working. I will cover them all here.

Stop Netflix Crashes on Roku

You usually have a few options to troubleshoot most Roku channels, disable the channel, update Roku, reinstall Netflix, or reset the Roku. As resetting will return it to factory settings and remove any customizations you may have made, we'll leave this one for last!

As with most system troubleshooting, we'll start with the simple stuff and move on to the more complex ones. This way, you can potentially restore Netflix with minimal effort.

Restart your Roku

Try a quick reboot before trying anything else. It can fix all sorts of problems and is worth doing first. Simply turn off the power, leave it for a minute and replace the power supply. Then try Netflix again.

Disable Netflix from Roku

As Netflix requires its own subscription, it uses a separate authentication process but through Roku to make everything work. Sometimes, a communication problem between the Netflix authentication server and your device can prevent Netflix from working. Just disable it and re-enable it to get everything working again.

  1. Open Roku and select Settings.
  2. Select Netflix Settings and Disable.
  3. Confirm your choice when prompted.
  4. Go to the Roku home screen and select Netflix.
  5. Follow the wizard to set it up again.

Once you've signed back into Netflix with your account, you should be able to watch your TV shows and movies again.

Update your Roku

Updating Roku can make a real difference to your experience and fix many channel issues. If the channel is updating but you are not updating your Roku, it may introduce instabilities into the system. The two should work together, but that's not always the case. Since checking for an update takes seconds, it's worth it.

  1. Press the Home button on your Roku remote and select Settings.
  2. Select System and System Update.
  3. Select Check now.
  4. Allow system update.

There may not be an update available, but it's worth checking. I've seen all sorts of random errors fixed by a simple system update. Since it's faster and easier than reinstalling the app, it's worth trying at least before that.

Reinstall Netflix

Our next troubleshooting step is to remove Netflix and install it again. It's a bit drastic but if nothing else has stopped Netflix from crashing on your Roku, it's the next logical step.

  1. Open Roku and select Settings.
  2. Select Netflix Settings and Disable.
  3. Confirm your choice when prompted.
  4. Press the Home button on your Roku remote.
  5. Highlight Netflix and press the star
  6. button.
  7. Select Delete Channel.

Browse the channels and reinstall Netflix. You can add or remove channels from your browser

but since you're already in front of your TV, you might as well do it from your Roku.

Reset your Roku

  1. It's the nuclear option and only really needed if more Netflix isn't working. If you really want this to work and nothing else has fixed the problem, you can reset your Roku if you want. It will reset it to factory settings and lose your channels and any configuration changes you have made.
  2. Press the Home button on your Roku remote and select Settings.
  3. Select System and Advanced System Settings.

Sélectionnez Factory Reset et Factory Reset Everything.

Give the Roku a few minutes to wipe, restart, and reset and it should be up and ready to go. You'll have to log back in and set everything up again, but everything should now work fine.
